Aster Aweke

Aster Aweke

Aster Aweke! What a revelation this tape is for fans of her early years. Ethiopian Amharic language popular music from one of the undisputed legends.

So smooth, such a rainy night vibe. Aweke’s voice soaring. Mid- or late-1970s, I believe.  The backing band I suspect is Roha Band (nee Ibex Band)… mellow af. Reminds me of the recent Hailu Mergia & Dahlak Band reissue.

I am not sure if the image you posted corresponds to the tracks you shared.

thank you for sharing. have not visited for some time due to tapes not being posted as often. one of my favorite aweke tapes.

my friend transliterated everything from his tape. there might be some errors. i think you have side a and b switched.

side a (your side b)
1) ቢቀር ሰውነትህ ጅንዬው
2) ወንፈት ሙሉ ሎሚ
3) ገና ለገና
4) ጠይም ዘለግ ያለ
5) ካቡ ተንዶብኝ

side b (your side a)
1) አመለኛው ቤቴ
2) ባይኔ ሙሉ
3) አይገኝ ከመንደር
4) አይራ እላለሁ
5) ይቅር ብዬሃለሁ

bonus “live” vids:

this site has a few great aweke tapes (some really not so great one’s as well. just have to skip around to find the older tapes) i’ve downloaded the good tracks here:

my favorite tape is labeled “ASTER AWEKE 2”

Here’s a track from the “ASTER AWEKE 2” tape:

this seems to be tape 3 of the possible 5 tapes she released on kaifa:

1st was grey acoustic:

2 tapes with wubishet fiessha

“ASTER AWEKE 2” from the zefen site and one other one? or at least this is what a friend and myself have been able to find on the web.

i think her other good tapes were released on electra.

btw, have you seen Cultural Ethiopian Music youtube channel?

they’re one of my all time favorite youtube channels. they share a ton of great older tapes (including some incredible aweke tapes. better quality than the link i sent earlier as well. not featured in the link i sent earlier is an incredible tape with walias band: ) . i get almost all of my music exclusively from people sharing their collections on youtube these days.

sorry for the long winded comment. very happy to see you’re back, and i hope you have more gems to share.

i’ve been especially interested in tapes from east africa….

Thanks for the great links! I’m a fellow Aster Aweke fan… especially her early stuff. I recently bought a copy of her album with Wubishet Fisseha and digitized it. The last two tracks were unlistenable and there was some warping… but overall it was a good purchase. I’m happy to share it if anyone is interested.
