Best of Sagbohan Danialou

Frank (Voodoo Funk) brought me a few Sagbohan Danialou tapes from Guinea. It’s an awfully impressive gift from someone who probably had a lot of other things to bring home, like, um, 6 million records. Not sure this is my favorite but there are a couple songs that move me, plus I found the cover to be idiosyncratic and I thought I should share it.

*—If you only listen to two-three songs

Face A
Commerce Triangulaire (A Qui la Faute)
Retour au Village
Africana
Foutou Banana
Suru
Tafè Yom’Tomè

Face B
Wan Gni Gni*
Djo Assou Tchédo (Laisse Moi Mon Mari)*
Avalè
Adji Non Wé
Programme Change
Afélélé*

Thank you for this wonderful gift from Sagbohan.

The Idiosynchratic cover was made by Joseph Kpobly: the greatest african set designer. Joseph worked on 5 films, like Yeelen or from Souleyman Cissé, a fantastic movie which won the “Granp prix” at Canne’s festival in 1987.

I tink you forgot to mention great titles from Sagbohan Danialou. “Foutou Banana” was great hit in West Africa. The lyrics made him famous in many countries. “Tafè Yom Tomè” is an old salsa tune from Danialou. When people discovered the melody in 1990 all the country could not stop dancing on it. All the clubs from Cotonou play it until now.

You can find a great live version from “Tafe yom tomé” on my blog:

Thank you again

Yes, I agree those three tracks are particularly good, but I really like the whole tape. One little thing, though – is it in mono or is there something wrong with my player?

Danialou Sagbohan is from Benin, not Guinea. It’s very common in Benin, Togo, Ivory Coast and that region to use the last name first. I haven’t found it anywhere else. In any event, thanks for posting this recording!
