Here’s something different for me. It’s from Angola (by way of a semi-mysterious package from Switzerland I received a while back). Softer, fado-oriented jams. Portuguese.

Bonga!Yes! This man played in my Dad’s wedding and is the music he grew up listening to…Bonga CDs were some of the only ones that my Dad would play in his car. And there is a lot more from where this came from…Bonga is a prolific singer, a larger than life figure in my Angola.

Dear ATFA, I’m sorry but this has nothing to do with fado nor is it in Portuguese. The last song actually is in Portuguese, but it’s so far-out that I’m not even sure it’s Bonga. (singing in a weird pitch and with Brazilian accent…)

For the ultimate Bonga goodness please try to find “Angola 72”, his debut album.

You might enjoy a compilation released by Buda Musique called “Angola 70’s: 1974-1978”, there are some supreme gems in it. (there’s another one, 1972 to 1974 or something which is also awesome, although not on tape…)

actually just few of the songs are in Portuguese. Most should be in local languages. There’s even one in Creoule (I guess from Cabo Verde, but not sure)

1 – Sambila (popular name of a neighbourhood in Luanda, officially called Sambizanga) – language: Kimbundu (a Bantu language spoken in Luanda)

2 – Um kandandu amigo (= A friendly hug; kandandu means hug in Kimbundu) – languages: Kimbundu and Portuguese

3 – Kamusekele (name given by the Angolan Bantu populations to the Bushmen living in southeastern Angola)

4 – Malalanza (= Orange) – language: Kimbundu

5 – Saudades Terras Enclave (Are you sure this is the title of the music? These words are Portuguese, but they do not form a correct sentence; nobody in Angola speaks like this; Saudades = homesickness; Terras = lands; Enclave = enclave)

6 – Mambia (= Mother Bia?) – language: Capeverdean Creole

7 – Mindjeris di Pano Preto (= Women dressed in black) – language: Capeverdean Creole

8 – Nguzo (= Strength) – language: Kimbundu

9 – Iokangue (= Fried (fish), in Kimbundu) – language: Portuguese; this a samba, the famous Brazilian rithm of Angolan origin; in this track, Bonga sings with a Brazilian singer
