Charles A. Chepkwony Kolu Band — Magtalena/ Oriango & Kipchamba

Side A: This shit has lengthy breakdowns that sound to me like early house music—if it was done on twangy guitars, muffly bass and break-your-bones live drums in East Africa.

Side B: By popular demand, “Face 2” of the Charles A. Chepkwony Magtalena cassette. The second side is labelled Oriango & Kipchamba. Anyone know who/what that is? Whatever it is, I like this Kenyan guitar band split.

One of the musical themes from Face 1 seems to get reprised in the third track of this side (Bane Matanda), making me wonder if both sides are not the same band?? Maybe just another ones of those random tape programming oddities??? Mysterious.

Side A

Kilyano Ratanga
Yach Busurek
Magtalena
Bakach Chebaigeiyat Sikilai
Kas Imam O Pilista

Side B

Pelina
Chemosi
Bane Matanda
Sukuli Ab Musoknotet*
Wuiyee My Lover*

*w/ the amazing spoken intro

The musician Kipchamba arap Tapotuk died in early April. Here is a link to his obituary in The Standard (Kenya).

http://www.eastandard.net/hm_news/news.php?articleid=1143967306

Oriango arap Chepkwony was a member of his band. Perhaps he is related to Charles A., or perhaps is the same person.

The cover says “From Original Recordings: Chandarana Recording Co.” According to the obit Kipchamba and Oriango recorded with the Chandarana Music Store of Kericho, Kenya, until about 10 years ago

What you might not know, which happens to be why I stumbled across this, is that a recent artist named El Guincho, from Spain, uses a guitar sample from the song Pelina in one of his popular songs “Antillas”. Great Stuff.

They are made of the skin of vuitton bag, camel or lamb and are very expensive. It is smooth and soft to touch and will not tear off fast like louis handbags. The stitching of a real piece is perfect and you will not be able to point out even a flaw. There will no hanging threads or louis handbag seen on an original bag.
