FAC Alliance Mariama
* Super warbly tape alert. Apologies for the awesome, nearly unlistenable effect.
Rap from Guinea, steeped in that quintessential urban West African stew of hip-hop, soul, dancehall and traditional rhythms and sounds (FAC Alliance lists Fulani, Susu and Mandinka inspiration on their website). There might be a touch too much reggae at times for me but I’m captivated by the overall vibe Nondi K, Pap G and Mista X are repping here. Frank Bessem’s great encyclopedia has some more background here.

I like his balaclava: homage to Pussy Riot?
I did in interview with Fac Alliance in 2004 in Ouagadougou, at the Waga Hip Hop Festival. The reason why one of the MC is wearing a hood is because was persecuted by the power (it is what he asserted), responsible for student activism at the Conakry U, and he wanted his face not to be recognizable. FAC is the french nickname for Faculté, which means University. Most of the rappers from this golden era of african hip hop were students.
hello. I am glad you gave this to us.
