This is an old school Guinean vocalist of the crooning, occasionally belting, variety. It’s all there: rhumba, jazz, and indigenous modes.
On the song “Souaressi”, as on most of the songs, Kouyate Sory Kandia is accompanied by an orchestra of traditional and western instruments.
The whole album makes me feel retro or something. Yeah!
I bought this tape at a market in central Bamako, Mali. Tapes there cost like 700-1000 CFA Francs (which is about $1.50-$2.00).

I visited Guinea in December, and this guy (I was told his name was Sory Kandia Kouyaté, but these things vary depending on who you ask!) was all over the radio to commemorate the death of Lansana Conte. “Siiba” is the song from a recording called “L’épopée du mandingue”. Ridiculously dramatic and haunting. I remember hearing it in a smallish village and marvelling at how perfectly it defined that moment in time for me. And then I heard it about 50 times after that, sometimes on 2 radios within 10 feet of each other (with 5 sec delay between the two!).
I downloaded the song, don’t know if you only rip stuff from tapes. Worth checking for in NYC. I am SO jealous, but your blog helps satisfy my cravings. Thank you.
