I just like this one a lot. Mah Damba is a pretty well known singer from Mali, but the real exciting thing here for me is the highly virtousic n’goni playing throughout. The n’goni is known by a number of names in West Africa, depending on the location and/or ethnicity of the person playing it.

There is this guy in Ghana named King Ayisoba whose skills on the koloko (as the instrument is known in Northern Ghana, a Frafra name), creative flexibility and moral character I will emphatically swear by.

thanks rob. ayisoba is a friend, actually. one of the nicest guys i know in ghana. a real talent, someone able to collaborate with just about anyone and bring something distinct to the table.

Many thanks for pointing me to King Ayisoba – His Modern Ghanaians has got to be one of this year’s best – all styles.

btw – isn’t Mah Damba’s n’goni player her husband Mamaye Kouyaté?

yes, i believe it is her husband. isn’t he one of the better n’goni players you’ve heard? this tape was a bit of a revelation that languished in my stacks for a while before i got to have a serious listen.

glad you’re feeling ayisoba! he was a nighttime security guard who played his kologo around the streets for change before he was discovered by the late ghanaian hiplife artist terry bonchaka (who invited him to play on his album).

It reminds me a little of Dimi Mint Abba of Mauretania.

This is possibly the coolest music blog ever, since this music would (probably) be nearly impossible for folks to get otherwise. Thanks!

However, I should point out that some tracks on the Mah Damba tape seem to be unavailable now–specifically: Pory, Diadia Kono, and Nadlanka Fala. Would it be possible to fix the links? Because this is great stuff. .

thursdayborn,

I wondered if you were still in contact with King Ayisoba and could ask him if he is seeing any income from his album being downloaded from iTunes and emusic. Just wondering from the point of view of how best to get my purchasing dollars to an artist pocket.

regards

i have not spoken to him in a long while it seems but i know his manager and he is a SUPER good guy, locally based, with a totally different approach to the music industry than most of his peers in ghana. therefore, i think it’s pretty safe to say that short of sending the money to ayisoba directly via western union, itunes, emusic and calabash are the best way to get him some cash money.
