fantastic!! this is the type of music i heard and loved when i backpacked through Egypt almost 20 years ago. unfortunately, every time i went to a music store and tried to buy traditional Egyptian and Nubian music, the salesmen would always try to sell me modern disco-fied Arabic pop music. not what i wanted. but they just could not grasp that a Westerner could have any interest in their traditional music. i did manage to find a couple of tapes, and if i come across them, i will send them your way.

Bay Ridge is a great place to find Arabic music. Check out El Amira on 5th Ave.–there are tapes a’plenty there.

wow, looking fwd for hearing this one…just back from Egypt, where only on the last day i realized i was able to listen to the radio thru my mobile phone and heard tons of wonderful vintage music. i also bought two tapes w/instrumental music from upper Egypt, all subtitles in Arabic, will be sharing them in a while on my blog – http://panmietek.blogspot.com/ – cheers for all of these!
