Teshome Wolde & Dahlak Band

Teshome Wolde and Dahlak Band

Now’s as good a time as any to make sure you have “immersing myself in the music of Teshome Wolde” on your musical bucket list for the summer this year. Get started with this insanely good tape from one of my fave labels Marathon Music Shop. #timelessguragignaoldies

Teshome Wolde is a Gurage singer who worked with Roha Band, Dahlak Band (a group that featured Hailu Mergia) and others. As usual, YouTube holds the key to a spectrum of guragigna music videos and songs. When you finish basking in Teshome Wolde’s diverse catalog, take a broader look at this rarely-discussed-outside-Ethiopia zone of neo-folk music. It swings hard like it some kind of 1950s soda fountain rockabilly band with this four-on-the-floor vibe against hand claps and hypnotic repetitions. Throw in some deeply soulful vocalists and gurage music is really something to shout about.

I may be wrong but, isn’t track 9 the same as track 8? if so was this a mistake when uploading the tape or did it come like this?

  • December 1, 2014 at 8:21 pm

Thank you for the upload! Just to clarify, Hailu Mergia was never a member of the Dahlak Band (nor ever featured). He did however, release a cassette (“Wede Harar Guzo”) in the late 1970s with the Dahlak Band backing him.

Hi, I would love to purchase a physical official copy of this album on cassette. Is this even possible? A friend of mine is a huge fan and I need this. Can you potentially direct me to where I can purchase an official pressing of this?

  • March 26, 2021 at 11:37 am

I would be happy if Hailu Mergia’s album “Yewodeke Abebe is released again.
